Think First!

Thursday brought us two guest speakers from Think First! This is an organization made up of medical personnel and individuals who suffered some form of spinal cord or head injuries. The purpose of the talk is to educate students on specifically what the brain and spinal cord do. They bring a model of the brain, spine and skull for students to actually see how they work. There is also a video that introduces the students to several people who have both spinal cord and brain injuries as well as a bit of their history and how they were injured. The final part of the talk was brought to us by Todd, a frequent visitor in class. He injured his spinal cord in a diving accident when he was 19. Now 37 he explains to the students what's it's like to live each day as a quadriplegic . The presentation as a whole really illustrates to the kids that although you can have fun in life, you need to wear proper equipment, buckle up, don't use drugs or alcohol while driving, and THINK FIRST!

Nutrition

This week we covered nutrition. All the basics of the new food pyramid was covered with each catagory broken down and discussed. Then the students were asked to write down everything they ate or drank for 48 hours. After learning about reading nutrition labels and breaking down what a balanced diet included students then took a 24 hours period of time and figured out how their own personal diet ranked. We discussed their findings identifying what improvements they could make as well as what they had been doing well. Feedback from the students was wonderful.

Jeopardy

We have finished with our Jeopardy play with much success. The teams that won will receive a prize as well as being excused from their classwork for points. It was great motivation to the students to learn as much as they could so they didn't have to do written work. Sneeky way I got them to work harder to earn that :)

I was very impressed with their play and how some of this knowledge actually seeped through. Ask your child what a word ends with when it refers to an inflammation or infection. Hopefully they say "itis".

More to follow.

Is anyone reading this? :)

They have covered the Respiratory, Circulatory, Digestive, Skeletal, Nervous, Muscular and Endocrine systems. Beginning Thursday they will take that knowledge to intense game play and commence Body System Jeopardy. Pictures to follow :)

Capsule Night

I want to thank the parents who came to Capsule Night. It was wonderful meeting all of you and putting faces with kids. I always enjoy having the chance to meet the parents and discuss what we will be doing in class. I kind of wish they had a Capsule Night for both semesters. Being a teacher who teaches different kids each semester I miss that the rest of the year.

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy the Blog and keeping in touch with your childs health education.

First Week

Welcome to the first week.
I have met all my new students and am very excited about getting going. I'm not sure my first hour is awake yet, but since this is the first time I've taught a first hour they may have always been this way. The past 9 years I have taught a class either before or after lunch, so I usually get kids that are anxious to eat or just had their daily fill of sugar :)

We are starting with our first unit Physical Health and Nutrition. If you have read the Unit Descriptions you'll have an idea what we'll be talking about.

Students have been asked to bring a journal to class for daily journaling. This journal should be small and inexpensive. No need for any 5 subject notebooks. They'll begin that on Monday and I'll post the questions asked either daily or weekly.
That's all for today!
