Thursday brought us two guest speakers from Think First! This is an organization made up of medical personnel and individuals who suffered some form of spinal cord or head injuries. The purpose of the talk is to educate students on specifically what the brain and spinal cord do. They bring a model of the brain, spine and skull for students to actually see how they work. There is also a video that introduces the students to several people who have both spinal cord and brain injuries as well as a bit of their history and how they were injured. The final part of the talk was brought to us by Todd, a frequent visitor in class. He injured his spinal cord in a diving accident when he was 19. Now 37 he explains to the students what's it's like to live each day as a quadriplegic . The presentation as a whole really illustrates to the kids that although you can have fun in life, you need to wear proper equipment, buckle up, don't use drugs or alcohol while driving, and THINK FIRST!
